Coming Home to New Orleans

I recently traveled back to New Orleans to spin at two venues: my old home base at 30x90 Frenchmen and at Gravier Street Social. Getting off the plane, I felt back at home. The first thing I did when I landed was go back to my favorite barber. There is no one I’ve found in New York that matches his talent.

With a fresh cut and feeling good, I was ready to play.

My time there was packed with studio time, taking pictures and preparing for my two gigs.

I had an incredible time at 30x90 Frenchmen. We added a good friend and one of the dopset turntablists, Kidd Love, to the show. We went back-to-back like the old times we played at 1913 in Baton Rouge.

Gravier Street Social is on the other end of the spectrum compared to 30x90 and it’s Lit AF. Fridays are Femme, by Standard Youth, is the legit hang out for every cutting edge DJ from and visiting the city. New stars like San Holo and others play there often, along with a lot of after-parties from the Metro and Republic.

After the gig at Fridays are Femme, I was invited to spin during a livestream on Sunday with DJs Parish and Iyaska. Every Sunday, Parish and Iyaska host a mix livestream of house music from 5 – 8 p.m. I was invited to be the guest DJ this week and we had a lot of fun filming.

I wasn’t born in Louisiana, but New Orleans has become much more than just another city to me. I’m reminded whenever I visit about how much that place means to me. I went to school, performed and made some of my best friends there. In the Big Easy, you have to have passion to play music and, regardless of what’s around you, the spirit of Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler is always by your side.
