10 Songs to Get the Party Started

Building a wedding playlist can be difficult, but it doesn’t have to be. The key to the perfect wedding playlist is spacing out all the different tempos and genres so everything flows smoothly. You don’t want too many dance songs in a row, you don’t want too many slow jams back to back, and you don’t want a series of classics clogging up a portion of the playlist.

You also want to have some flexibility with your playlist in case things start to drag and you need to pick the action up again. If you’ve hired a DJ for your wedding reception party, they will feel the crowd and play music accordingly, but if you’re DIYing it, you have to be aware of how your attendees are responding.

Regardless of which direction you go, there are always some crowd favorites to play when you want to get everyone back up and grooving.

Ten Songs to Get the Party Started

  1. “Shape of You” - Ed Sheeran. An upbeat love song performed by our favorite ginger musician, this song mixes pop and eclectic music together for a perfect and necessary addition to any wedding playlist.

  2. “We Found Love” - Rihanna ft. Calvin Harris. Can you really go wrong with Rihanna and Calvin Harris? This electro-pop song is the perfect tune to kick off a wedding reception.

  3.  “Don’t Stop Believin’” - Journey.  You would be crazy not to include this song on your wedding playlist. This song will have every single one of your guests lip syncing and playing the air guitars.

  4. “You’re the one that I want” - from Grease. Ooh, ooh, ooh! This is the perfect song to add a bit of upbeat, nostalgic flavor to your wedding reception playlist.

  5.   “Bennie and the Jets” - Elton John. Almost all Elton John songs are a great addition to any wedding playlist, but this song is one of my personal favorites. Despite or perhaps because of the obscure lyrics, this song is fun to dance to and even more fun to sing.

  6. “24K Magic” - Bruno Mars. With an old school sound and new age technology, this 2016 hit has a spot in any wedding reception playlist. Perfect for when the night gets late, this song can pump up even the most exhausted guests.

  7. “I Gotta Feeling” - Black Eyed Peas. If this song lands a spot on your wedding reception playlist, we gotta feelingit’ll be a winner with the crowd.

  8. “Can’t Stop the Feeling” - Justin Timberlake. Mr. Timberlake never disappoints when it comes to party songs, and this one is one of his best. Stash this number in your playlist anywhere you feel like it or whip it out when the party starts to lag.

  9. “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)” - Whitney Houston. Another classic dance song, this Whitney Houston song can fit in at any spot, but it’s perfect for when the party starts to sag.

  10. “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” - Bill Medley. Who isn’t a fan of “Dirty Dancing”? Even if someone isn’t a fan of the movie, this stellar tune has the perfect lyrics to land a spot on the playlist.

These universal dance songs can be enjoyed by young and old, and they are sure to get the party started wherever you place them in your wedding reception playlist!
