We’ve all joked about marrying our dog, cat, or human best friend. But did you know people actually marry strange things like ghosts, rollercoasters, and blankets?  Weird, I know. Here are the top five weirdest things people have married!

Five Weirdest things people have married

1.     The Eiffel Tower. In 2007, Erika LaBrie married the Eiffel Tower in a commitment ceremony. An advocate for object sexuality, she's claiming to have had an attraction to more than one object in her life. In fact, she contributes her success as a competitive archer to the relationship she had with her bow, and she claims that she has a physical relationship to a section of fencing that lives in her bedroom. As far as her connection with the Eiffel Tower, she feels like it's her true love, and she legally changed her name to Erika Eiffel.

2.    A blow-up doll. If you enjoy reality TV, then you’ve probably seen this guy on TLC talking about his relationships with blow-up dolls.  His relationship has gone even further at this point because he has officially married one of his favorite dolls. He’s not the only person who has married a real doll, but he is the most famous. He lives with his wife and another doll that he refers to as his girlfriend.

3.    A Chandelier. Amanda Liberty has had plenty of relationships in her 33 years of life. She first fell in love with a drum kit at age 14, and later, she fell in love with the Statue of Liberty and changed her name to reflect her love. Today, Amanda is engaged to a 28in wide Chandelier she calls Lumiere. She says it was love at first sight, and she spent around $400 on this antique light fixture. She has 25 hanging lamps and reports being in an open relationship with all of them.

4.    A video game character. Did you know that it is legal to marry inanimate and imaginary objects in Guam? A Japanese man named Sal9000 knew this and married his favorite character from a Nintendo video game. The character was Nene Anegasaki from the video game Love Plus, a virtual dating game.

5.    Themselves. It was a joke in the show Glee, but plenty of people have married themselves over the years. Liu Ye from China decided to marry himself and tied the knot with a cardboard picture of himself wearing a red dress. Laura Mesi, an Italian fitness trainer, married herself when she was 40 years old after a long-term relationship ended. Her ceremony included a full white dress, a huge cake, and bridesmaids.

It’s clear that people’s reasons for marrying weird things can differ from making a statement, truly feeling like you’re in love with an inanimate object, or wanting to feel better about yourself. In most places, there are no laws that specifically ban you from marrying animals or inanimate objects, so that’s good news if you’ve ever really considered the legalities of marrying your dog. I mean, everyone deserves to be happy!
